Civil registry

The Venice State Archives hold the Atti dello Stato Civile di Venezia (1806-1815) fund, which contains the birth, marriage and death registers introduced in the department (territorial order of the Napoleonic era) with the decree activating the civil status offices in the municipalities, which remained in operation until 1815. From this date, until the introduction of the Italian state regulation, the functions of civil registrar revert to the parish priests. The search for sources for the period 1815-1870 should therefore be carried out in the diocese and the parishes in the area.

Army census

The archival fonds relating to conscription are: Military district of Venice, (classes 1832-1910); Military district of Padua, western province, (classes 1912-1927); Military district of Padua, eastern province, (classes 1921-1926); Military district of Padua, (classes 1928-1946).

Port Authority, collects the lists of the sea service of the maritime compartment of Chioggia (classes 1889;1891-1944) and of the maritime compartment of Venice (classes 1901-1944).

Recruitment number and military draw number

Military district of Venice preserves alphabetical columns and matriculation rolls of the military district of Venice (classes 1873-1899; 1912-1943 with a gap and 1900-1911); other documentation relating to matriculation files, eastern and western province, dated between 1884 and 1943 is being reordered.

Online Sources

The institute has developed a database of conscription lists.

The database currently includes the records of the classes 1871-1875 and 1879-1881 for a total of 28,631 records and will be updated gradually.

Data from the draft lists of 1865-1870, 1876-1878, 1882-1890 have already been acquired and are being revised, and there are plans to implement them with data from 1848-1864 and 1891-1900.

The aim is to complete the registration of all young people in the province of Venice born from 1848, the first class called up for conscription by the Kingdom of Italy in the Veneto, until the end of the 19th century.
