Civil registry

The Modena State Archive holds the Napoleonic Civil Registry (1806-1814), the Austria-Este period (1852-1865) and the Italian period (1866-1920). The attached series (1852-1963), despite being incomplete in some towns, constitute a precious complementary source to other archives, such as the so-called “Parish Certificates” required to issue a specific certificate. The marriage and death certificates (1866-1920) are still being inventoried and are available for consultation at the Study Room of this archive.

Army census

The Recruitment sources are gathered in the following series: Recruitment Commission (1802-1814); Austria-Este Military Archive (1849-1859); Modena Province Recruitment Lists (classes of 1840-1947), Reggio Emilia Recruitment Lists (classes of 1917-1947; from 1840 to 1916 at the Reggio Emilia State Archive).

Recruitment number and military draw number

The Modena and Reggio Military Districts hold the draft cards (that is to say, the cards in which we can find information of the military service) for the recruits born between 1874 and 1945. The Institute holds as well the registries of the 1846-1817 classes, a period in which many gaps have been reported.

For the previous periods please check the personal scripts of the recruits (1814-1859).

Other Sources In The Archive

The Institute has participated in the “Portale degli Italiani” : in which the birth certificates from 1860 to 1899 of the cities of Bastiglia, Bomporto and Campogalliano are available for consultation

Other sources in the archive

The series Conscription Acts (request of military service exemption) contain documents that could be relevant for family history, such as the Family Book, in which we can find a detailed description of the family at the moment of the military draft.
