Civil registry

The Registry civil was established in 1819 by Ferdinand I, King of the Two Sicilies. The collection includes material produced during the Bourbon period and later during the Unification period, the modus operandi of the municipalities remained almost unchanged. The civil registrars compiled the following registers: records of legitimate births, records of illegitimate births or proles, memoranda, marriage records or solemn promises, death records and various other records. At the same time, the annexes to birth certificates, marriage certificates, etc. were collected in files. With the Royal Decree of 15 November 1865, the new order was introduced, which provided for the compilation of citizenship registers, but did away with the registers of other acts.

The fund includes the Registry civil and their annexes of municipalities in the Catania territory for the years 1820-1893.

For the period 1820-1865 there is documentation produced by the civil status office of Catania (but only from 1841 to 1865) and of the municipalities subject to the Catania Intendancy. Also included in this series was material relating to the towns now in the province of Enna (established in 1927): Assoro, Carcaci, Catenanuova, Centuripe, Gagliano, Leonforte, Nicosia, Nissoria, Regalbuto, Sperlinga and Troina. These documents were transferred to the State Archive of Enna in 2013.

For the period 1866-1893 the registers of the municipality of Catania and province are kept, with the exception of the municipalities of Caltagirone, Grammichele, Militello, Mineo, Mirabella, Palagonia, Raddusa, Ramacca, S. Cono, S. M. di Ganzeria, and Vizzini.

Army census

The Military District of Catania Fund (1840-1890) contains:

Service lists (1840-1948). The series also includes material from the pre-unification period. In addition to the draft lists for the period from 1840 to 1890, there are also the extraction registers. For the period 1844-1891, the registers of minutes of the ordinary meetings of the Conscription Councils and the general lists of draft dodgers can also be consulted.

The Harbour Office Catania fund includes the lists of conscripts in the Navy and consists of 94 registers relating to the 1936-85 conscription classes. The fund can be consulted by means of payment lists divided by year produced by the same body.

Recruitment number and military draw number

The Military District of Catania fund contains:

Matrical rolls (1871-1889) (includes the draft classes 1871, 1877, 1880, 1887, 1889). Research in the registers uses an alphabetical repertory consisting of a list of names and their matriculation numbers, subdivided by year. The same research tools can be consulted online.

Personal files of soldiers (1862-1900). In 2013 and 2016, a further 360 files were added to this large collection, with documentation of soldiers from the classes from 1876 to 1898, completing the original collection. The files are sorted by class of birth. The search is carried out using various consultation tools structured according to the year of extraction and the alphabetical list of names of the military personnel whose files are held. The same lists can be consulted online.
